Completely agree with this take. 1Q84 felt like an indulgent Murakami book -- if you enjoy the Murakami style it's fun, but it wasn't a tightly written book. The others suggested above (or A Wild Sheep's Chase/Dance Dance Dance) are a little bit more fulfilling.
